Game 1
The Pioneers struck first in the opener and took a 4-0 lead midway through the fourth inning. St. Olaf put one run on the board in the bottom of the fourth, but a 3-run home run in the bottom of the sixth tied the game at 4-4.
The Pioneers answered with three runs of their own in the seventh, including senior
Caitlin Giacomo bringing in two runs on a line drive triple.
Senior
Carlie Jo Brownlee and sophomore
Bentley Cutts split duty in the circle with Brownlee pitching the first four innings. Brownlee struck out three, walked two and allowed three hits and one earned run. Cutts (W, 2-0) tossed relief and secured the win, striking out three, walking one and allowing one hit and three earned runs.
Game 2
Northwestern struck right away with a solo-run in top of the first, but UW-Platteville answered with five runs scored in the bottom of the inning, including a 3-run homer by junior
Mia Savage. The large advantage started to dwindle and a Northwestern single in the top of the 6
th tied the game 6-6.
The Pioneers went three-and-out on their next at-bat and then found themselves trailing 7-6 going into the bottom of the seventh. UW-Platteville loaded the bases just in time for Savage to take a hit by pitch and score the tying run. With two outs, the walk-off run scored when junior pinch runner
Taylor Lynch scored as Northwestern's second baseman couldn't get the ball out of her glove quick enough to get the out at first.
Junior
Allison Peters finished the game 2-for-3 with two runs scored while Savage was 1-for-2 with a game-high four RBI.
Four Pioneers spent time in the pitcher's circle with closer
Nora Buske (W, 1-0) capturing her first career win. Buske struck out three, walked four, and allowed four hits and three earned runs.
UW-Platteville will return to action on Tuesday, March 10 when they travel across the Mississippi for a doubleheader at the University of Dubuque. First pitch is scheduled for 3 p.m.
