PLATTEVILLE, Wis. – In a physical contest, the University of Wisconsin-Platteville men's soccer team (3-1-2) fell 1-0 to Edgewood (2-1-2) on Saturday night inside Ralph E. Davis Pioneer Stadium.
The game was scoreless after the first 45 minutes, with the Pioneers outshooting the Eagles by a narrow margin of 5-4. Edgewood held the advantage in shots on goal however, but senior goalkeeper
Seth Aiken turned aside both attempts on net.
The second half felt similar to the first, with neither team finding many scoring opportunities for the first 20 minutes. But in the 65
th minute, Edgewood drew a foul in the box and converted the ensuing penalty kick to take the lead. UW-Platteville was unable to get the equalizer in the final 25 minutes, as the Eagles held on for the one-goal win.
For the match, the Pioneers finished with a 10-8 lead in shots, but Edgewood led 5-2 in shots on goal. Sophomore
Westley Hankes recorded both of UW-Platteville's shots on frame while coming off the bench.
The two teams combined for 19 fouls and six yellow cards in the contest, showcasing the physical play throughout the game. UW-Platteville led 7-4 in corner kicks, with the Eagles not attempting a corner in the second half.
The Pioneers host Dubuque on Tuesday night for a 7 p.m. match.
