RIVER FALLS, Wis. – The University of Wisconsin-Platteville men's soccer team (5-2-3, 0-0-1 WIAC) opened conference play on Saturday afternoon with a 2-2 draw against UW-River Falls (3-4-3, 0-0-1 WIAC) from Ramer Soccer Field.
The Falcons scored the only goal in the first half after a long throw in bounced off a Pioneers defender and into the net in the 29th minute. UW-River Falls held a 6-1 advantage in shots across the first 45 minutes, but senior goalkeeper
Seth Aiken came away with a pair of saves to keep it within one goal.
Freshman
Liam Holtzen tied the game at one in the 51st minute, his first goal of the season. After a long corner kick bounced around and off several players, Holtzen gathered the loose ball and fired a point-blank shot into the top of the net for a goal.
UW-River Falls regained the lead in the 57th minute, but senior
Sebastian Carranza answered in the 60th minute to even it at two apiece. Carranza's third goal of the season came after a long pass from freshman
Keegan Maxfield allowed Carranza to outrun the defense and fire a shot into the lower corner.
Neither team scored for the remainder of the contest, and the game reached full time tied at two. The Pioneers finished with a 10-9 lead in shot attempts after outshooting the Falcons 9-3 in the second half. Holtzen and freshman
Roberto Salinas paced the team in shot attempts with two.
The Pioneers host Nebraska Wesleyan in a non-conference match on Tuesday. Game time is set for 1 p.m.
