PLATTEVILLE, Wis. – A seventh-minute goal was all the University of Wisconsin-Platteville men's soccer team (5-2-2) needed in a 1-0 win over Wartburg (3-5-1) on Wednesday evening inside Ralph E. Davis Pioneer Stadium.
Senior
Sebastian Carranza provided the lone goal in the contest in the seventh minute, his second goal on the season. Junior
Thomas Gaither sent the ball into the box and found the head of sophomore
Westley Hankes who directed the pass to Carranza for a shot into the lower left side of the net.
Wartburg was unable to find the equalizer in the remainder of the match, as senior goalkeeper
Seth Aiken made four saves to record the clean sheet. The shutout is Aiken's fourth on the season and 22nd of his career, which matches Nate Miller (2016-2019) for the most in UW-Platteville program history.
Each team finished with nine shot attempts in the game, with the Pioneers posting a 6-4 advantage in shots on goal. Carranza and senior Danny Gutwziller paced UW-Platteville with two shots on goal.
The Pioneers will begin WIAC play this weekend when they travel to UW-River Falls on Saturday afternoon. Game time is scheduled for 3 p.m.
