Pioneers split Saturday doubleheader

STEVENS POINT - The University of Wisconsin-Platteville baseball team went 1-1 against University of Wisconsin-Stevens Point on Saturday. The Pioneers won 11-4 before losing 8-7 at University Field.

The Pioneers moved to 12-15 overall (7-7 WIAC) and the Pointers are now 14-14 overall (6-8 WIAC). After the Pioneers 3-1 weekend, they sit in third place in the WIAC baseball standings.

Senior Keegan Madigan started on the mound and earned the win in game one. Madigan threw seven innings with zero earned runs allowed, zero walks and six strikeouts. The Pioneers went up 1-0 in the first inning and Madigan was able to hold off the Pointers until the Pioneers scored eight runs in the fifth inning. In the fifth inning, there were five walks and two singles that ultimately set up a grand slam by junior Josh Moses. The Pioneers led 9-0 after the inning which proved to be enough of a lead.

The Pioneers managed to score 11 runs on just five hits but were aided by the Pointers 12 walks. 

In the second game, the Pioneers managed to build an early lead but were forced into extra innings and ultimately lost 8-7. The Pioneers led 3-0 after the second and 5-2 after the third inning and 7-4 headed into the bottom of the ninth. The Pointers rallied to score three runs with two outs in the ninth to force extra innings.

Sophomore Ryan Vogel went 2-of-5 with a homerun, two RBI, a walk and a run scored. Freshman Ben Espinoza and Moses each chipped in two hits and an RBI of their own.

The Pioneers play host to finish their season series against UW-Whitewater on Tuesday, April 23 at Kendall Murray Field with games starting at 1 and 4 pm.
