Pioneers Drop Season Opener to Coe, 2-1

Two first half goals by host Coe sparked the Kohawks to a 2-1 win to spoil the season opener for the UW-Platteville men's soccer team on Thursday night in Cedar Rapids.

The Pioneers (0-1) outshot Coe by a 24 to 9 margin but the home team converted a corner kick in the 22nd minute and a penalty kick in the 35th minute for goals and the win. UW-Platteville sophomore Richard Rowell singlehandedly outshot the Kohawks with a match-high 11 shots. The effort by Rowell is the most since an 11-shot effort by Laity Loum in the 2005 season opener against Dubuque.

Rowell broke into the scoring column with his first goal as a Pioneer in the 36th minute after a pass from freshman Hunter McMahon. UW-Platteville sought out the equalizer throughout the second half with a 12 to 3 advantage in shots; however, the Coe defense and goalkeeper Grady Brown kept the Pioneers at bay.

Next, UW-Platteville travels on Saturday to face Ripon at 3:30 p.m.
