PLATTEVILLE, Wis. – The University of Wisconsin-Platteville women's soccer team (2-2-2) scored once in each half while shutting out Wartburg (1-3-1) in 2-0 win on Wednesday night inside Ralph E. Davis Pioneer Stadium.
In the 18th minute of the first half, freshman
Elisabeth Holmes put the Pioneers ahead with her first goal of the season. Senior
Sarah Liljestrand, who picked up the assist, played the ball off a corner kick and Holmes was able to navigate to the front of the net and push the ball home.
UW-Platteville controlled the tempo for much of the first half, outshooting the Knights 8-1 and leading 4-0 in corner kicks. Wartburg was able to generate more chances in the second half with seven shots, but only two were on goal as the Pioneers' defense held strong.
Freshman
Morgan Hospodarsky tacked on an insurance goal in the 85th minute to put the game out of reach. Her first goal came following a long cross from Liljestrand that Hospodarsky outran her defender and sent past the keeper.
In goal, senior
Marguerite Mueller finished with three saves to record her second win of the season and second shutout in the past three games.
The Pioneers held an 18-8 advantage in total shots, including 9-3 in shots on goal. Holmes had a team-high four shots and three on target, while senior
Margaret Slove had three chances off the bench.
Next up will be Illinois Wesleyan, who travel to Platteville on Saturday for a 6 p.m. start.
