Pioneers Draw With Oles Saturday Night

PLATTEVILLE, Wis. – A late game-tying goal sent the University of Wisconsin-Platteville women's soccer team (1-2-2) to a 2-2 draw with St. Olaf (2-0-3) on Saturday night inside Ralph E. Davis Pioneer Stadium.

The Oles struck first, scoring in the sixth minute of the opening half on their first shot attempt of the contest. Sophomore Mira Petri answered in the 15th minute after dribbling her way into a good look on goal. The score was her second on the season.

St. Olaf broke the tie in the final minute of the first half after shot deflected off UW-Platteville's keeper and into the right side of the net. The Pioneers held an 11-9 shot advantage over the opening 45 minutes, but the Oles goalkeeper recorded seven saves.

UW-Platteville got the equalizer in the 80th minute after senior Emma Verdon found the net for the first time in her career after corralling a bouncing corner kick and firing the ball into the goal. Junior Ava Peterson and sophomore Devyn Davis earned assists on the tying score.

The Pioneers outshot St. Olaf 22-14 for the contest, including 15-7 in shots on goal. Senior Sarah Liljestrand had a team-high four shots, three on goal, while senior Margaret Slove and junior Lexi Atkinson each had three shots. Eleven different Pioneers attempted a shot in the game.

In goal, Marguerite Mueller matched her season-high with five saves on seven shots faced.

UW-Platteville remains at home to face Wartburg on Wednesday night. Game time is 7 p.m.
