STEVENS POINT, Wis. – The University of Wisconsin-Platteville baseball team dropped a pair of games against UW-Stevens Point on Friday afternoon from Zimmermann Field. The Pointers (19-19, 11-15 WIAC) won game one 10-0 in seven innings before rallying to defeat the Pioneers (18-19, 9-17 WIAC) 10-9 in game two.
Senior
Connor Gresens put together a strong performance in the second game, tallying four RBI while finishing 4-for-4, including a home run and double.
Game One
Neither team mustered up much offense in the first 1.5 innings, but a hard hit fly ball by Braylen Nystrom in the bottom of the second stayed fair as it breezed by the foul pole for the Pointer's 10
th home run of the season. UW-Stevens Point would score five runs before the end of the second inning. The Pointers added to its lead with runs in both the fifth and seventh frames to win the game 10-0 in seven innings.
Freshman
Sam Callow (L, 5-2) threw the first 1.2 innings, allowing five runs on three hits with two strikeouts and two walks. In relief, senior
Wyatt Fischer tossed two scoreless frames while striking out two, walking one and surrendering four hits and two runs in 3.1 innings.
UW-Platteville recorded four hits in the contest and the Pointers tallied nine hits with neither team recorded an error.
Game Two
The Pioneers put together a dominant performance until a late comeback handed the Pointers their second win of the day.
Gresens hit a three-run shot over left center to give the Pioneers a 3-0 advantage in the top of the first. The senior registered his fourth RBI of the game in the top of the third on a double to right center. Freshman
Ethan Birkel drove in two more runs in the third, singling through the right side.
The Pioneers increased their advantage to 7-0 in the fifth inning behind an RBI-double by senior
Spencer Robertson down the right line. Momentum started to shift, and UW-Stevens Point began to build its comeback, scoring two runs in the fifth and two more in the sixth frame. UW-Platteville added two insurance runs in the top of the ninth, pushing the lead to 9-4, but it proved to be not enough as the Pointers walked off in the ninth, scoring six runs off three home runs.
Starting pitcher
Carver Kamentz put together a strong outing, holding UW-Stevens Point scoreless through four innings and striking out six across six innings. The freshman surrendered six hits and three earned runs while walking two Pointers.
The Pioneers finished with 10 hits and one error in the game two while the Pointers finished with 11 hits and five errors.
