PLATTEVILLE, Wis. – A pair of free throws by junior
Bristol Lewis with 30 seconds remaining put the University of Wisconsin-Platteville men's basketball team (14-6, 6-3 WIAC) ahead for good in a 76-75 win over UW-Oshkosh (14-6, 5-4 WIAC) on Wednesday night inside Williams Fieldhouse.
After a scoreless first half, Lewis scored 17 points across the final 20 minutes while going a perfect 6-of-6 from the floor and 3-for-3 from three-point range. Senior
Max Love led all Pioneers in scoring with 21 points, 17 of which came in the first half, on 6-of-10 shooting with four made threes. Rounding out the double-digit scorers was senior
Aiden Wieczorek, who finished with 12 points on 5-of-8 shooting.
The Titans' offense roared out the gate, scoring 12 points on their first four possessions. UW-Platteville kept pace, getting three-point makes from Love and Wieczorek and a jumper by junior
Max Lucey to tie the game at 12. The two sides traded baskets for the next several minutes until an eight-point Pioneers run made it 35-28 with 3:34 left in the half. UW-Oshkosh cut the deficit down, but UW-Platteville entered halftime up four at 40-36 following a final second jumper by freshman
Kaden MacKenzie.
The lead flipped back to UW-Oshkosh early in the second half after back-to-back threes gave the visitors a one-point advantage. Senior
Joey Fuhremann put the Pioneers back up one with 11:03 to play, and Lewis knocked down a long three to increase the lead to four. However, the Titans rallied and held a slight 72-70 lead with 3:27 left.
A layup by Lewis tied the game, and Love made a tough shot to put UW-Platteville in front 74-73 with 1:12 remaining. UW-Oshkosh regained the lead on the next possession, but Lewis drew a foul and knocked down two free throws with 33 seconds left to make it 76-75. Following a Pioneers turnover, the Titans missed two shot attempts but got one more opportunity after a missed UW-Platteville free throw. UW-Oshkosh drew a foul with 0.8 seconds on the clock, but missed both free throws and Love secured the rebound as the Pioneers hung on for the win.
UW-Platteville shot 49.1 percent (26-of-53) from the floor and 50.0 percent (10-of-20) from three-point range in the win. The Titans were held to 39.7 percent (23-of-58) shooting, but went to the line often and finished 18-of-25 (72.0 percent). Four Titans scored in double figures, with Michael Metcalf-Grassman and Carter Thomas each scoring 14.
The Pioneers held a 35-30 advantage on the glass, with Fuhremann's six boards pacing the team. MacKenzie dished out a team-high four assists, while junior
Lucas Rameker added three.
UW-Platteville travels to No. 23 UW-La Crosse on Saturday for a 5 p.m. tip-off.
