Pioneers Drop Road Contest To Eagles

LA CROSSE, Wis. – The University of Wisconsin-Platteville men's basketball team (14-7, 6-4 WIAC) fell behind early and trailed throughout in a 92-67 loss at No. 23 UW-La Crosse (16-5, 6-4 WIAC) on Saturday evening inside Mitchell Hall.

Senior Aiden Wieczorek matched his career high with 16 points, shooting 5-of-13 from the floor and a perfect 5-of-5 from the line. Joining him in double figures was senior Joey Fuhremann, who scored 14 points on 4-of-5 shooting with six made free throws.

Outside of that duo, the Pioneers struggled to find consistent offense, shooting 35.1 percent (20-of-57) for the game and 15.4 percent (4-of-26) from three-point range. UW-Platteville was able to get to the line at a good clip and shot 74.2 percent (23-of-31).

The Eagles scored the first nine points of the game before Wieczorek got the Pioneers on the board with a jumper. UW-Platteville was able to trim the deficit down to four on multiple occasions over the next couple minutes, including at 17-13 following a layup by Wieczorek, but UW-La Crosse pushed the lead up to 12 behind an 10-2 run. The lead hovered around double figures for the remainder of the half, and the Pioneers entered the break trailing by eight at 41-33.

The Pioneers kept pace with the Eagles for the first couple minutes of the second half until 12 straight points by the home team made it 60-40 with 12:23 left. UW-Platteville was unable to chip away at the deficit, and the advantage reached a game-high 27 at 86-59 in the final five minutes. Freshman Cooper Hoffman scored the final points of the game with just over a minute left as the Pioneers fell 92-67.

UW-La Crosse shot 52.4 percent (33-of-63), including 59.4 percent (19-of-32) in the second half. Sam Greiger dropped 31 points on 10-of-18 shooting, while Dustin Derousseau finished with 21 points.

UW-Platteville travels to UW-Whitewater on Wednesday night for a 7 p.m. tip-off.
