Pioneers Close Regular Season With Draw Against Warhawks

PLATTEVILLE, Wis. – In the annual battle for the Shaymus Guinn Cup, the University of Wisconsin-Platteville men's soccer team (9-4-4, 4-0-1 WIAC) and UW-Whitewater (10-2-6, 2-0-3 WIAC) played to a 2-2 draw on Friday night inside Ralph E. Davis Pioneer Stadium.

The Warhawks scored first in the 18th minute, but the Pioneers answered shortly after  in the 24th minute on junior Aiden Hatleberg's third goal of the season. Junior Westley Hankes sent a long pass upfield that Hatleberg tracked down and fired past the UW-Whitewater keeper who had drifted too far out of net.

UW-Platteville took the lead in the 35th minute on the first goal of the season by sophomore Gavin Urben. Hatleberg was credited with the assist after kick towards the net was deflected by Urben.
The score remained in favor of the Pioneers until the 65th minute, when the Warhawks made the most of a chance in front of the net to tie the match at two. Both teams had chances on goal in the final 25 minutes, but the score remained even, resulting in the draw.

UW-Whitewater held a 14-10 advantage in total shots, including 8-5 in shots on goal. UW-Platteville made the most of its chances in the first half, converting both shot attempts in scores. Eight different players had at least one shot for the Pioneers, led by two from Hatleberg and sophomore Caden Wits.

In goal, sophomore Connor Waite matched his season-high with five saves, bringing him to a total of 35 this season.

The Pioneers turn their attention to next week's WIAC Tournament and will enter the top seed after claiming the conference regular season title. UW-Platteville will host the semifinals next Friday against the lowest remaining seed.
