Joey Fuhremann and
Max Love each scored over 20 points as the University of Wisconsin-Platteville men's basketball team (9-3, 1-0 WIAC) opened conference play with a 72-63 road win over UW-Stout (4-8, 0-1 WIAC) on Saturday afternoon inside Johnson Fieldhouse.
Fuhremann set a new career-high with 22 points on an efficient 10-of-12 shooting while Love recorded a double-double with 21 points and 10 rebounds. Love shot 7-of-15 from the floor while knocking down 3-of-6 attempts from beyond the arc. Junior
Bristol Lewis joined the duo in double figures with 13 points with three made threes.
The Blue Devils led in the early stages of the first half until a nine-point Pioneers run put the visitors in front for the first time at 18-16. Each team traded baskets as the game neared halftime, and UW-Platteville took a 29-28 lead into the break as Fuhremann scored a hook shot for the Pioneers final points of the half.
UW-Platteville's lead grew to 11 points quickly in the second half as Lewis made back-to-back threes to cap a 13-3 run. UW-Stout chipped away at the deficit over the next several minutes and tied the game at 44 apiece with just over 10 minutes remaining. Lewis and Fuhremann helped the Pioneers retake a six-point lead, but the Blue Devils remained in striking distance until a three-pointer by Love just before the shot clock expired made it 64-57 with 1:09 left. UW-Platteville closed out the victory with solid free throw shooting to win 73-63.
The Pioneers shot 45.8 percent (27-of-59) from the floor and 36.8 percent (7-of-19) from deep in the game but were much better offensively in the second half. UW-Platteville sat at 53.6 percent (15-of-28) across the final 20 minutes, and made 45.5 percent (5-of-11) tries from three.
UW-Stout finished at 41.7 percent (20-of-48) from the field and 45.5 percent (10-of-22) from three. Domanyck Schwarzenberger scored a team-high 15 points off the bench for the Blue Devils.
UW-Platteville held a 43-26 advantage on the glass and outrebounded the Blue Devils 9-0 on the offensive end. The Pioneers also dominated in the paint, outscoring UW-Stout 36-14 in that category.
Wednesday night will be the conference home opener for the Pioneers, as they host UW-Eau Claire at 7 p.m. on Bo Ryan Court.
