STEVENS POINT, Wis. – The University of Wisconsin-Platteville men's basketball team (13-6, 5-3 WIAC) fell 81-62 at UW-Stevens Point (15-4, 5-3 WIAC) on Wednesday night after the Pointers pulled away down the stretch inside Quandt Fieldhouse.
Four Pioneers reached double figures in the loss, with senior
Max Love and junior
Bristol Lewis sharing the tam lead with 11 points apiece. Seniors
Joey Fuhremann and
Miles Hettinger each added 10 points as UW-Platteville shot 52.4 percent (22-of-42) from the floor but turned the ball over 15 times.
The Pointers scored the first six points of the game and held the lead until a layup by freshman
Cooper Hoffman and a three by Love handed the Pioneers their first lead of the game at 21-20. The two teams flipped the advantage back and forth over the next couple minutes until a six-point UW-Stevens Point run made it 35-30 with 1:37 left. Lewis scored the final two points of the half from the line as the Pointers led 35-32 at the break.
Early in the second half, a six-point run capped by a jumper by junior
Max Lucey gave the Pioneers a 44-42 lead, but the Pointers answered with a three to go back in front. UW-Platteville took its final lead of the game at the 12-minute mark on a layup by Hettinger, and the contest was later tied at 51 with 10:09 remaining. From there, UW-Stevens Point went on a 21-2 run over the next six minutes to gain full control. UW-Platteville was unable to overcome the 19-point deficit as the Pointers picked up the 81-62 win.
UW-Stevens Point shot 50.9 percent (28-of-55) for the game and 44.1 percent (15-of-34) from three. The Pointers got 24 points off UW-Platteville turnovers, which proved to be a difference despite the Pioneers solid shooting numbers. Seth Miron scored a game-high 27 points on 10-of-15 shooting for the Pointers.
Love, Fuhremann, and Lewis shared the Pioneers team lead in rebounds with four each. UW-Platteville shot 41.2 percent (7-of-17) from three and 73.3 percent (11-of-15) from the free throw line.
The Pioneers will have the weekend off before hosting #20 UW-Oshkosh next Wednesday night at 7 p.m.
