Pioneers Take Down No. 6 Eagles On Saturday

PLATTEVILLE, Wis. – Senior Miles Hettinger and junior Bristol Lewis led an efficient offensive performance as the University of Wisconsin-Platteville men's basketball team (11-3, 3-0 WIAC) upset No. 6 UW-La Crosse (11-3, 1-2 WIAC) 89-78 on Saturday evening from Bo Ryan Court.

The Pioneers shot a season-high 59.2 percent (29-of-49) from the floor in the win, including 50.0 percent (9-of-18) from beyond the arc. Hettinger led the way with a season-high 23 points on 9-of-12 shooting off the bench, while Lewis dropped 22 points on 7-of-10 shooting with four made threes. Three other Pioneers reached double digits in senior Aiden Wieczorek (13), junior Lucas Rameker (11), and senior Max Love (10).

Both teams started fast offensively, and the score sat even at 26 just past the midway points of the first half. Wieczorek, Rameker, and Lewis all knocked down early threes to help UW-Platteville keep pace with the Eagles. The Pioneers took the first multi-possession lead following an 11-2 run, and the lead grew to double digits with two minutes left in the half on a triple by Lewis. UW-La Crosse cut the deficit down to eight at halftime, as UW-Platteville led 45-37.

Lewis scored 15 of his 22 points in the first half, going 5-of-6 from the floor and 3-of-3 from deep. Hettinger was perfect from the floor at 5-for-5, as UW-Platteville shot 66.7 percent (18-of-27) across the opening 20 minutes.

The Pioneers lead remained in double digits for much of the second half and even reached a game-high 20 on a basket by Hettinger with 7:26 left in the contest. The Eagles chipped away at the deficit over the next couple minutes and trailed 80-71 after a nine-point run with just over four minutes left. UW-Platteville weathered the comeback attempt with several free throw makes and a two-handed slam by Hettinger to hang on for the 11-point win.

UW-Platteville was dominant on the glass once again, out rebounding the Eagles 36-18. Senior Joey Fuhremann grabbed a team-high seven boards, while Love and Lewis each collected six. The Pioneers dished out 15 assists, with Love's four pacing the team.

For UW-La Crosse, Sam Greiger scored a game-high 27 points on 11-of-21 shooting, while Dustin Derousseau added 19 points. The Eagles shot 45.9 percent (28-of-61) from the field but just 30.0 percent (6-of-20) from three-point range.

The Pioneers will travel to face No. 21 UW-Oshkosh next Wednesday night at 7 p.m. The Titans fell to 2-1 in conference play after losing to UW-Stevens Point.
