Pioneers Cruise To Sweep Of Cornell

MOUNT VERNON, Iowa – Senior Kierney McDonald led an efficient offensive attack as the No. 13 University of Wisconsin-Platteville volleyball team (4-1) earned a third consecutive sweep, this time against Cornell College (3-2), on Friday night inside the Small Athletic and Wellness Center.

The Pioneers posted a hitting percentage of .333 and totaled 12 kills to claim the opening set 25-18. The second set was much more back-and-forth, with neither team leading by more than three until a Rams attack error and a service ace by senior Kelsey Ewert put UW-Platteville up 24-20. Cornell answered with three consecutive points, but sophomore Kennedey Barber ended the rally with a kill to put the Pioneers in front by two sets.

The third set was close in the early stages, but an 11-2 run by the Pioneers made the score 21-12. McDonald, Barber, and sophomore Brooklyn Radecke all had kills across the run, and UW-Platteville was able to wrap up the sweep with a 25-14 set three win on a match-clinching kill by Barber.

McDonald finished with a match-high 13 kills, posting a .684 hitting percentage and not making an error across her 19 attacks. Radecke and sophomore Abby Bauer each added six kills to tie for second on the team.

UW-Platteville finished with 38 total kills in the sweep, with eight different players tallying at least one. The Pioneers hit .277 over the course of the match, the team's best in a single contest so far this season.

Senior Gracie Gibbens (13) and freshman Delali Amankwa (11) each reached double figures in assists. Radecke finished with a team-high eight digs.

The Pioneers will head to Dubuque on Wednesday night for a 7 p.m. match.
