DUBUQUE, Wis. – The No. 13 University of Wisconsin-Platteville volleyball team (4-2) fell 3-1 to an undefeated No. 23 University of Dubuque (9-0) Wednesday night inside the Stoltz Sports Center.
The first set started as a back-and-forth match until a 6-1 run gave the Spartans a 10-5 lead. Senior
Kierney McDonald cut the deficit to 11-8 with a pair of kills, but a three and four-straight run pushed the Spartans' advantage back to seven points, and they went on to win 25-20.
In the second set, the Pioneers took an early 6-4 lead, but a 10-1 run turned the tables in favor of Dubuque and the Spartans pulled ahead to a 25-14 victory.
After the Spartans jumped out to a five-point advantage in the third set, back-to-back kills by junior
Kennedy Wenger and McDonald cut the Spartans' lead to 11-8. The Spartans answered with three of the next four points, but a 7-0 run featuring kills by sophomore
Brooklyn Radecke and sophomore
Laura Boberg, an ace by sophomore
Abby Bauer, and four errors gave UW-Platteville a much needed 16-14 lead. The Spartans tied the match at 21, but a kill by Radecke sealed the 25-22 win to force a fourth set.
Once again, the start of the final set stayed close with the Pioneers trailing 8-7, but the Spartans gradually pulled away for the 25-18 victory for the match.
Both Wenger and Radecke finished in double digits with 11 kills as Wenger posted a .333 hitting percentage. Boberg had a team-high 15 assists while Radecke finished with 14 kills to lead UW-Platteville.
The Spartans held a .191 - .076 hitting advantage and eight blocks compared to two by the Pioneers.
UW-Platteville will return action when they travel to the Carthage Invite this weekend where the team will take on the host school on Friday at 7 p.m.
