Pioneers Fall In Five To Pointers

STEVENS POINT, Wis. – The University of Wisconsin-Platteville volleyball team (9-6, 2-1 WIAC) won the opening two sets but ultimately fell in five at UW-Stevens Point (9-7, 2-1 WIAC) on Tuesday night inside Berg Gym.

The Pioneers won the first set 25-18 after pulling away behind a trio of multi-point runs. The second set was much more closely contested until kills by sophomore Brooklyn Radecke and junior Kennedy Wenger put UW-Platteville up 22-20. The Pointers evened the set at 23 apiece but a kill by Wenger and a block from sophomore Abby Bauer and senior Kierney McDonald sent the Pioneers to a 25-23 win.

UW-Stevens Point took the third set 25-17 after going on an 8-2 run to close out the set. That momentum carried over to set four, with the Pointers getting out to a five-point lead until the Pioneers answered with five straight to get back withing one at 14-13. The Pointers regained control and later won 25-22 to force a fifth set.

A 6-1 run midway through helped UW-Platteville pull ahead 11-8 in set five. But UW-Stevens Point responded with four straight points to take the lead, and the two teams traded points until the Pioneers led 17-16. The Pointers closed the match by scoring three straight points to win 19-17 and claim the match by a score of 3-2.

Three Pioneers reached double figures in kills, with McDonald matching her career-high of 19 on a .447 hitting percentage. As a team, UW-Platteville totaled 62 kills while posting a .205 hitting mark.

Radecke recorded the double-double with 14 kills and a team-high 20 digs, while Wenger was the third with double digit kills with 11. Freshman Delali Amankwa (16), junior Bria Johnston (13), and senior Kelsey Ewert (11) joined Radecke with double figure digs.

Senior Gracie Gibbens finished with a team-high 23 assists, with Amankwa reaching 20.

The Pioneers return home for the annual Yell Night match against Coe on Thursday night at 7 p.m.
