PLATTEVILLE, Wis. – In front of a packed Williams Fieldhouse, the University of Wisconsin-Platteville volleyball team (9-7) faced off against Coe College (11-4) Thursday night in the annual homecoming Yell Night match. After being tied 1-1, the Kohawks pulled ahead to win the contest 3-1.
The final attendance checked in at 1,214 which sits fourth best all-time in Yell Night crowds.
The first set started with the Pioneers pulling ahead 11-2 as the Pioneers forced seven attacking errors. The set continued to be back-and-forth until Coe finished with a 7-1 run to win 26-24.
The second set was all Pioneers as they scored the first nine points, including four kills by sophomore
Brooklyn Radecke. A kill by junior
Bria Johnston put UW-Platteville ahead 18-6 and a block by sophomore
Abby Bauer and junior
Kennedy Wenger closed out the set 25-11.The Pioneers finished the set hitting .414.
Set three started as a back-and-forth match until a 5-0 run put Coe ahead 12-8. The Kohawks led the rest of the set, but a kill by McDonald cut Coe's advantage to 22-18. McDonald added another kill, but it was too late as the visitors went on to claim their second set 25-20.
The final set remained close until a 7-1 run put Coe ahead 15-7. The Pioneers rallied midway through with a 7-1 run of their own, narrowing the set 17-15, but the Kohawks found a late burst of energy to pull ahead 25-17. Coe finished the set hitting .394.
Radecke paced the Pioneers and finished with 16 kills on a .233 hitting percentage. McDonald posted nine kills and added four blocks. Senior
Gracie Gibbens had a team-high 18 assists while senior
Kelsey Ewert had double-digit digs with with 12.
Overall, the Pioneers claimed the advantage in hitting percentage .141 -.138, while Coe held edges in total kills 53-41 and blocks 8-7.
The Pioneers will return to action on Tuesday, Oct. 7 when they host Edgewood college at 7 p.m. in Williams Fieldhouse.
