Pioneers Pick Up Midweek Sweep at Augustana

ROCK ISLAND, Ill. – The No. 13 ranked University of Wisconsin-Platteville volleyball team (3-1) swept Augustana College (2-2) in three sets Wednesday evening inside the Carver PE Center.

Augustana took an early 6-2 lead in the first set, but five-straight midway through gave the Pioneers their first lead of the night. Junior Bria Johnston wrapped up the set 25-23 with her fourth kill of the evening.

In the second set, the Pioneers finished with their largest lead of the night, winning 25-13.  UW-Platteville had its best hitting percentage of the match with .237 while holding the Vikings to a negative .048.

Augustana kept the final set within grasp at the start after a few Pioneer errors cut UW-Platteville's lead to two points. However, a 6-1 rally in favor of UW-Platteville pushed the advantage to 16-9. Back-to-back kills by sophomores Kennedey Barber and Brooklyn Radecke and an error pushed the lead even further to 19-10. In the end, a kill by sophomore Abby Bauer and an ace by freshman Delali Amankwa wrapped up the 25-14 win and the match.

Senior Kierney McDonald with 10 kills led the Pioneers with a fourth-straight double digit kills match. McDonald posted a .320 hitting percentage and added a match-high five blocks.

Senior Gracie Gibbens totaled 17 assists and Radecke (12) and senior Kelsey Ewert (10) each recorded double digit digs.

The Pioneers will return to action on Friday, Sept. 5 when they travel to Cornell College for a match starting at 7 p.m.
