BLOOMINGTON, Ill. – The University of Wisconsin-Platteville women's soccer team (5-3-1) finished a thrilling showdown Saturday afternoon in a 3-3 draw at Illinois Wesleyan (5-4-1). The Pioneers scored all three goals within a three-minute window in the second half.
The Titans set the pace in the first half, out-shooting the Pioneers 9-5 and scoring the lone goal in the 43
rd minute right before halftime.
After the break, junior
Elise Kukuck tied the game with an assist from junior
Jess Morawski in the 56
thminute. Less than two minutes later, junior
Sarah Liljestrand scored again and about a minute later, a goal by junior
Margaret Slove, assisted by freshman
Raven Rogers turned the tides to a 3-1 advantage in favor of the Pioneers.
Illinois Wesleyan cut the lead to one with a successful penalty kick in the 70
th minute and then a goal in the 79
th minute tied the game 3-3. The fans stayed on the edge of their seats as both teams got at least two shots off before the end of time, including a pair of shots from the Titans in the final seconds of the half.
The Pioneers were outshot 18-13 in the contest, but Illinois Wesleyan held just an 8-7 edge in shots on goal. Morawski paced the Pioneers with four shots, including three on frame, while Liljestrand finished with three shots, including two in the final five minutes of the game.
Junior
Marguerite Mueller finished with five saves after 90 minutes in goal.
UW-Platteville will return to action on Wednesday, October 1 when they host the University of Dubuque at 7:30 p.m. inside Ralph E. Davis Pioneer Stadium.
