Pioneers Set Season-High Kills Mark In Win Over Blue Devils

PLATTEVILLE, Wis. – Behind a season-high 66 kills, the University of Wisconsin-Platteville volleyball team (7-5, 2-0 WIAC) took down UW-Stout (11-4, 0-2 WIAC) 3-1 in a conference match on Friday night inside Williams Fieldhouse.

Three Pioneers reached double digit kills, led by senior Kierney McDonald's team leading 18. Junior Bria Johnston was second with 15 kills, while sophomore Brooklyn Radecke added 11. Junior Kennedy Wenger finished just shy of double figures with nine kills and freshman Grace Rohde posted seven on a team-best .357 hitting percentage.

As a team, the Pioneers hit .267, the fourth time this season over the .200 mark. UW-Stout finished with a .153 hitting percentage with 43 total kills in the match.

The Blue Devils held a three-point lead early in the opening set, but a 9-2 run in favor of UW-Platteville flipped the score to 14-9. UW-Stout got back within three on multiple occasions, but the Pioneers secured the set victory 25-16 on a block and kill from McDonald.

UW-Stout trailed by as many as eight in the second set until a five-point run put the visitors ahead 22-21. The two teams traded points until a kill and a UW-Platteville attack error handed the Blue Devils a 29-27 set two win. The third set had a similar cadence, with the Pioneers building a nine-point advantage only to see UW-Stout close the gap to three at 22-19. This time an attack error and kills by McDonald and Johnston held off the Blue Devils rally in a 25-20 Pioneers win.

UW-Platteville jumped out to a 10-point advantage in the fourth set and didn't let UW-Stout get any closer than five the rest of the way. Johnston, sophomore Abby Bauer, and McDonald scored the final three kills to claim set four 25-17.

Radecke finished with a team-high 13 digs to post a double-double in the win. Johnston (nine), senior Kelsey Ewert (nine), and senior Gracie Gibbens (eight) also had strong dig numbers. Freshman Delali Amankwa had 27 assists to pace the team with Gibbens dishing out 26. At the net, McDonald totaled two solo blocks and three block assists.

The Pioneers will host a quad this weekend, with Marian (Wis.) and MSOE joining UW-Stout for two-court volleyball. UW-Platteville faces Marian at noon on Saturday, with a match against MSOE scheduled for 2:30 p.m.
