PLATTEVILLE, Wis. – Behind a pair of first-half goals, the University of Wisconsin-Platteville women's soccer team (4-1-0) held off a late rally to beat Luther (3-1-1) by a score of 2-1 on Wednesday night from Ralph E. Davis Pioneer Stadium.
Sophomore
Jorie Carr got the scoring started for the Pioneers with a goal in the 28th minute of the opening half. Following a pass from junior
Jess Morawski, Carr fired a shot from just outside the box that ricocheted off the post and into the keeper before bouncing into the net.
UW-Platteville added a second goal just before halftime in the 44th minute on a long shot from junior
Meghan Frantz. Her first goal of the season was assisted by Carr.
The Pioneers maintained the two-goal advantage for much of the second half until the Norse cut the lead in half in the 82nd minute. The defense stepped up for the final eight minutes, holding Luther to no shots as UW-Platteville secured a third straight win.
The shot totals favored the Pioneers 17-5, including 8-4 in shots on goal. Freshman goalkeeper
Sophia Vriesema put together another strong showing in net, posting three saves to record the win.
Nine different players recorded a shot for UW-Platteville, led by three apiece from juniors
Elise Kukuck and
Margaret Slove. The duo shared the shots on goal total with graduated student
Leah Ahlers.
The Pioneers hit the road for an early morning contest on Saturday against Simpson. Game time is scheduled for 10:30 a.m.
