Late Goal Downs Pioneers Against Cardinals

WINONA, Minn. – The University of Wisconsin-Platteville women's soccer team (1-1-0) dropped its first game of the season on Monday evening, falling 2-1 on the road to Saint Mary's (Minn.) inside Ochrymowycz Field in Winona, Minnesota.

The Cardinals took the early lead, scoring in the fifth minute of the first half on a shot into the lower right corner of the net. The score remained the same for the remainder of the half, with UW-Platteville unable to break through on its three shots on goal.

The Pioneers answered in the second half on junior Sarah Liljestrand's second goal of the season. Liljestrand headed ball past the keeper following a pass from junior Jess Morawski to knot the game at one apiece in the 53rd minute.

Saint Mary's regained the lead for good in the 70th minute on penalty kick goal. UW-Platteville had a couple of scoring chances in the closing minutes, but the Cardinals defense held strong.

The Cardinals finished with a 12-10 advantage in shots in the contest, including 8-6 in shots on goal. Freshman goalkeeper Sophia Vriesema finished with six saves for the Pioneers.

UW-Platteville welcomes in St. Scholastica on Friday night for the 2025 home opener. Game time is slated for 5 p.m.
