SAN ANTONIO, Tex. – In the second day of competition against preseason ranked teams, the No. 13 University of Wisconsin-Platteville volleyball team (2-1) swept No. 10 Trinity (Tex.) after falling in four sets to No. 12 Millikin inside of the Bell Center.
Match One
As four preseason Top-25 teams convened at Trinity for the two-day tournament, the Pioneers head back to Wisconsin with heads held high following strong performances in all three matches. After a 3-1 victory on Friday, the Pioneers opened Saturday with a four-set thriller against Millikin.
In the first set, a five-point run, including two kills from senior
Kierney McDonald, gave the Pioneers a 14-9 lead. Sophomore
Brooklyn Radecke's kill put the Pioneers ahead 22-19, but after set point, Millikin tied things up 24-24. Back-to-back kills by junior
Bria Johnston gave the advantage back to UW-Platteville. Millikin had two chances at set point, but a kill and three straight errors gave the Pioneers the 30-28 win.
Millikin took the second set 25-21 and then won a 25-23 battle in the third set. The final set was tied 13-13, but Millikin went on an eight-point spree, pulling ahead and winning the fourth set 25-18.
Johnston paced the Pioneers with 14 kills, and McDonald finished with 12 kills on a .321 hitting percentage while posting six block assists and one solo block.
Match Two
Shaking off the hard-fought loss earlier in the day, UW-Platteville and Trinity battled back-and-forth in all three sets, with the Pioneers never allowing the Tigers to lead by more than three points in the match.
Tied 24-24 in the first set, junior
Kennedy Wenger's kill followed by an attack error gave the Pioneers a 1-0 advantage. UW-Platteville wasted no time in the second set and jumped out to an 11-1 lead thanks to five kills by three different Pioneers. The teams exchanged serves for much of the remainder of the set, but the deficit was too much to overcome with the Pioneers winning 25-19.
Tied 6-6 in the third and final set, a six-point run gave UW-Platteville another cushion which would come in handy later in the match. Trinity closed the gap at 17-17, but back-to-back kills by Johnston and Radecke sealed the deal and win for the Pioneers.
McDonald posted another double-digit kills match with 11 and UW-Platteville finished the match with a .178 hitting percentage compared to Trinity's .092.
At the conclusion of the tournament, McDonald was named MVP and was joined on the All-Tournament team by senior libero
Kelsey Ewert.
The Pioneers will travel back to Wisconsin and return to action on Wednesday, Sept. 3 when they travel to Augustana at 7 p.m.
*As with every UW-Platteville win this year, the Platteville A&W will be offering a $3 Pioneer burger the day after the win and the Platteville Taco John's will be offering 10 tacos for $10 the day after each Pioneer win.
