Pioneers Fall In Non-Conference Game To Wartburg

PLATTEVILLE, Wis. – In a non-conference contest on Tuesday afternoon, the University of Wisconsin-Platteville baseball team (17-16) fell 6-3 as Wartburg (19-17) pulled off a late inning comeback from Kendall Murray Field.

The first two Pioneers batters reached base in the bottom of the opening inning and freshman Anthony Massa delivered a single to right field to put the home team on the board first. The score remained 1-0 in favor of UW-Platteville until the sixth, when senior Jake Wegner ripped a one-out double to right center that brought in senior Justin Fago and sophomore Dylan Rippentrop to extend the lead to three.

Wartburg flipped the score in the other direction with a five-run eighth inning, highlighted by a two-run home run and a two-run single that gave the Knights the lead. Another run scored for Wartburg in the ninth, and they retired the Pioneers in order in the bottom of the inning to complete the comeback.

Senior Conner Paulson was saddled with the loss for UW-Platteville after allowing six runs (three earned) on four hits across the final two innings. Junior Sawyer Molitor and sophomore Wyatt Fischer threw the first seven innings for the Pioneers, combining to allow just three hits while striking out six.

The Pioneers finished with eight total hits, with freshman Trinity Beland and Massa each finishing 2-for-5. Junior Sam Meidenbauer went 1-for-4 to extend his hitting streak to 11 games.

UW-Platteville will head to No. 2 UW-Whitewater to conclude the WIAC regular season this Friday and Saturday. Friday's doubleheader is slated to begin at 1 p.m. with game two scheduled for 4 p.m.
