Pioneers Drop Pair Of One-Run Games To Warhawks

WHITEWATER, Wis. – The University of Wisconsin-Platteville baseball team (17-18, 12-14 WIAC) battled second-ranked UW-Whitewater (33-3, 23-3 WIAC) to pair of close games on Friday, but fell in one-run fashion both times by scores of 4-3 and 5-4 in ten innings from Prucha Field in Whitewater.

Game One

Junior Sam Meidenbauer got the scoring started in game one, driving in freshman Anthony Massa and sophomore Caleb Parker with a double in the top of the first inning to put the Pioneers in front. In the second inning, UW-Platteville was able to increase the lead to three when senior Riley Dutton scored on a throwing error.

The Warhawks erased the deficit over the next two innings, scoring once in the second before putting up three in the top of the third inning to jump in front 4-3. The score remained that way for the remainder of the game as UW-Whitewater held on to win by one.

Senior Jake Wegner was charged with the loss for the Pioneers after allowing four runs across three innings. Junior Pierce Nelson entered in relief and threw five scoreless innings while scattering four hits and walking three.

Both teams finished with eight hits in the game, with mutli-hit performances for Massa and sophomore Connor Gresens leading the way for UW-Platteville.

Game Two

After the Warhawks scored one in the bottom of the second inning, Massa continued his strong day with a three-run home run in the top of the third inning to swing the score in favor of the Pioneers. UW-Whitewater regained the lead with two runs in the third and another in the fourth to put them in front 4-3.

Meidenbauer tied the game in the eighth inning with a solo home run to left field and the game remained tied after nine innings. The Warhawks held the Pioneers scoreless in the top of the tenth and won the game in the bottom half of the inning on a bases loaded walk.

Sophomore Peerson Kephart fell to 3-3 on the season after giving up the winning run in the tenth inning. Senior Isaac Bixby got the start for the Pioneers, throwing five innings and allowing four runs (three earned) while striking out six.
