WOOSTER, Ohio – Junior
Bristol Lewis knocked down a floater in the closing seconds as the University of Wisconsin-Platteville men's basketball team (8-3) wrapped up non-conference play with a 69-67 win over Wooster (4-8) in the final game of the College of Wooster Kiwanis Classic on Tuesday evening inside Timken Gymnasium.
Lewis, who was named the E.M. "Mose" Hole Tournament MVP, finished with a game-high 22 points in the contest, including the game-winning basket on a tough runner in the paint with just three seconds remaining. He shot 8-of-17 from the floor, including 4-of-7 from three-point range.
Senior
Miles Hettinger led three other Pioneers in double figures with 14 points and a team-high nine rebounds. Hettinger earned Defensive MVP honors following the two games and shot 6-of-13 from the floor in Tuesday's win. Junior
Lucas Rameker, who earned All-Tournament Team recognition, added 11 points behind a trio of made threes, while senior
Joey Fuhremann dropped 10 points.
UW-Platteville led by as many as 12 in the first half and built upon an early advantage behind a 10-point run after Wooster knotted the game at three apiece. The Fighting Scots cut the deficit down to four on multiple occasions and later scored the final six points of the half to trail 39-37 heading into the break.
Wooster took its first lead of the game two minutes into the second half until an eight-point run in favor of the Pioneers made it 47-40. The lead disappeared quickly however, and the two teams remained close until senior
Aiden Wieczorek knocked down a three to put UW-Platteville up 63-58 with just over six minutes left. The Fighting Scots knotted the game up at 65 with under two to play, but Lewis gave the lead back to the Pioneers on the following possession. Wooster tied the game again with 19 seconds left on a turnaround jumper, and Lewis answered again with three seconds left. The final shot attempt for Wooster came up short as the Pioneers secured the two-point victory.
The Pioneers shot 42.4 percent (25-of-59) from the floor and 47.1 percent (8-of-17) from beyond the arc. Wooster shot better in both areas (50.0 percent from both the field and three), but UW-Platteville got to the line more often (11-of-14 versus 4-of-6) and held a 16-4 advantage in points off turnovers.
For the Fighting Scots, Tommy Vaughn Jr. and Quincy Jones led the way with 18 points apiece off the bench. The duo shot a combined 16-of-24 from the floor.
UW-Platteville opens WIAC action this Saturday at UW-Stout. Tip-off is slated for 3 p.m. in Menomonie.
