PLATTEVILLE, Wis. – Five members of the University of Wisconsin-Platteville football team were named to the D3football.com All-Region Team it was announced on Wednesday afternoon.
Earning First Team honors was running back
Zackary Bothun, while offensive tackle
Joshua Zitzer, safety
Harrison Meyer, and punter
Benjamin Younker were each named Second Team All-Region. Long snapper
Beau Kopp collected Third Team recognition.
Bothun ran for a career-high 885 yards, posting his third consecutive 800-yard season in the process. The First Team All-WIAC selection scored 13 touchdowns on the ground, third-most in the conference, and had three touchdown games in wins over Aurora, Dubuque, Springfield, and UW-Eau Claire. Bothun recorded four 100-yard games, including 148 yards against Alma and 123 against Bethel in the NCAA Playoffs. The junior's 1020 all-purpose yards was fifth-best in the WIAC.
Zitzer anchored UW-Platteville's stout offensive line while starting all 12 games at left tackle. The Pioneers ranked top three in the WIAC in rushing yards and passing yards per game, while the team's 8.4 yards per pass attempt was tops in the conference. Zitzer and the rest of the offensive line allowed just seven sacks on the season, tied for ninth fewest in NCAA DIII. The senior was named First Team All-WIAC following the regular season.
Meyer was all over the field for the Pioneers defense, and recorded career-highs in tackles (62), tackles for loss (4.5), and interceptions (4) this season. The First Team All-WIAC selection broke up an additional six passes and even had 1.5 sacks from his safety spot. The junior was tied for second in the conference with his four interceptions and he added a forced fumble in UW-Platteville's win over UW-Stout.
Younker earned his second straight All-Region selection after receiving First Team honors last season. The junior punted 39 times on the season for 1605 yards with 14 landing inside the 20-yard line. Younker averaged 41.2 yards per punt, second-best in the WIAC, and had a long punt of 62 yards. Only two of his punts resulted in touchbacks, and UW-Platteville's 38.1 net yards per punt was second in the conference.
Kopp, who also earned First Team All-WIAC honors two weeks ago, appeared in all 12 games as UW-Platteville's long snapper. His talents helped the Pioneers convert 53-of-54 extra point tires with adding six field goals. The team was also second in the WIAC in average yards per punt.
