PLATTEVILLE, Wis. – The University of Wisconsin-Platteville athletic teams begin another week, led by postseason competition for volleyball and cross country. Football concludes the regular season while men's and women's basketball and wrestling continue the early portion of their schedules this week.
Volleyball Hosts WIAC First Round Match
It's WIAC Tournament this week for the Pioneers volleyball team, starting with a first-round match at home against UW-La Crosse on Tuesday night at 7 p.m. The winner advances to the semifinals on Thursday, with the championship match taking place on Saturday.
The Eagles clinched a berth into the conference tournament after beating UW-Stout 3-1 to secure the sixth seed. UW-La Crosse is 20-11 on the season and are led offensively by Kayla Sexton (2.60 kills per set) and Grace Nommensen (2.24).
Wrestling at Home for First Dual
The Pioneers wrestling team will compete twice this week, starting with a home dual against Cornell on Thursday night at 6 p.m. UW-Platteville then travels to the Luther Open on Saturday, with action beginning at 9 a.m. in Decorah, Iowa.
Cornell fell to No. 5 UW-La Crosse in its lone dual of the season by a score of 39-7. Eli Sneed (133 pounds) and AJ Parrish (157) scored for the Rams in that dual.
Women's Basketball Heads Out West
The Pioneers women's basketball team travels out to Walla Walla, Washington this weekend for a pair of contests. UW-Platteville takes on Whitworth on Friday at 5 p.m. before facing Whitman on Saturday at 2 p.m. in the Kim Evanger Raney Memorial Classic.
Friday's game will be the season opener for Whitworth, with the Pirates coming off an 8-17 record in 2024-25. Ashlyn Peterson, the 2025 Northwest Conference Rookie of the Year headlines the returners for Whitworth.
Whitman earned a pair of wins in Texas this past weekend to start the season 2-0. Holly Morgan leads the team with 16.5 points per game through two games, while Kaella Peters adds 11.0.
Men's Basketball Hosts Gabe Miller Classic
Coming off a season-opening win, the Pioneers men's basketball team will host the Gabe Miller Classic sponsored by the DRA this weekend. UW-Platteville take on Coe at 7 p.m. on Friday night and Carroll on Saturday at 5 p.m.
The Kohawks beat Cornell this past weekend to start their season with a win. Leading the way in that one was Cole Hrubes (19), while Kanyon Bryte scored 15 points in just 18 minutes.
Carroll hung close with No. 5 WashU to begin the season but ultimately fell 90-78. Michael McNabb dropped a team-high 22 points, while Lamar Smith (20 points) and Jacob Naber (18 points) also had strong nights.
Cross Country Runs at Regional Meet
The Pioneers cross country teams return Colfax, Wisconsin this Saturday for the NCAA North Regional Championships. UW-Platteville previously ran at the Whitetail Golf Course in early October and will have some familiarity with the layout. The men's 8K race begins at noon with the women to follow at 1 p.m.
Football Wraps Up Regular Season
After hanging on to beat UW-Stout this past weekend, the Pioneers football team travels to UW-Eau Claire on Saturday to conclude the regular season in a 1 p.m. kickoff.
The Blugolds fell to 3-6 on the season and 0-6 in WIAC play after losing to UW-Whitewater this past weekend. Quarterback Ayden Helder has thrown for 11 touchdowns and 1872 yards on the season, with Yaach Chuol his favorite target (593 receiving yards and six touchdowns).
