PLATTEVILLE, Wis. – A pair of goals in the final 20 minutes sent the University of Wisconsin-Platteville women's soccer team (7-3-2, 1-0-1 WIAC) to a 2-0 home win over UW-Whitewater (5-5-4, 0-2-0 WIAC) on Wednesday night inside Ralph E. Davis Pioneer Stadium.
Both teams put together stout defensive efforts in the first half, with each side tallying three shots, none of which were on frame. That trend continued in the early stages of the second half, until junior
Jess Morawski was taken down in the box in the 74th minute to draw a penalty kick. She converted the attempt with a shot to the left as the keeper dove the opposite way for her third goal of the season.
The Pioneers would add to the lead in the 84th minute, after junior
Margaret Slove fired a shot from the edge of the box past the outstretched keeper. Junior
Elise Kukuck was credited with the assist on Slove's second goal of the year.
UW-Platteville outshot the Warhawks 11-9 for the game, including 3-1 in shots on goal. UW-Whitewater's lone on target attempt was turned aside by the Pioneers' defense in the 49th minute to keep the game scoreless at the time.
Morawski recorded two of UW-Platteville's three shots on goal and shared the team lead in total shots with Kukuck and sophomore
Angelina Labrague. In goal, junior
Marguerite Mueller collected the win, improving her record to 2-0-2 this season.
The Pioneers continue conference play at UW-River Falls on Saturday afternoon. Game time is scheduled for 2 p.m.
