Pioneers Battle in Loss to Eagles

PLATTEVILLE, Wis. – The University of Wisconsin-Platteville volleyball squad battled throughout in a loss to Edgewood University Tuesday night in Williams Fieldhouse 18-25, 24-26, 25-15, 24-26.

The first set started as a back-and-forth contest and as the teams got pass midway through the set, the Eagles used a 4-1 run to take a 20-17 lead. A kill by junior Bria Johnston drew the Pioneers within two, but Edgewood's five-point run closed the first set.

Set two mirrored the previous set, and after a pair of kills and block by senior Kierney McDonald, the teams were knotted 10-10. Edgewood took a 20-18 lead, but four straight put the Pioneers in the lead 22-21. A kill from sophomore Brooklyn Radecke tied the set once again at 24, but the Eagles had the final say with a kill and service ace.

Trailing by two sets, UW-Platteville started the third set on a tear, jumping out to a 9-2 lead, including three kills from Radecke. The Pioneers extended the lead to 15-6  and cruised to a 25-15 victory, pushing the match to a fourth set. UW-Platteville finished the frame with a night-high .314 hitting percentage.

The final set looked very similar to the start of the first two and midway through, kills by senior Makayla Mau and junior Kennedy Wenger gave the Pioneers a 17-15 advantage. The teams exchanged serves until a 4-0 run gave Edgewood a 21-19 lead. The Eagles reached match-point 24-22, but a kill by McDonald followed by an attacking error tied the set 24-24. The Eagles finished the night with a kill and then an attacking error by the Pioneers for the four-set victory.

McDonald and Radecke each finished with 15 kills. McDonald reached the mark behind a .462 hitting percentage and added four block assists. Radecke was in on three blocks as were Wenger and Mau. Senior Gracie Gibbens finished with a match-high 29 assists and tallied two service aces.

Gibbens and senior Kelsey Ewert eacj finished in double digit digs with Ewert digging 15 and Gibbens tallying 13.

The Pioneers will return to action this Friday when they host Northpark and Simpson in a triangular with UW-Platteville playing in the final two matches of the night at 5 and 7 p.m.
