CHICAGO, Ill. – The University of Wisconsin-Platteville volleyball team (23-5) picked up a pair of wins at on Saturday evening, sweeping Carthage (14-11) in the team's first match of the day before taking down North Park (12-15) in four sets inside North Park Gymnasium in Chicago.
Match One Highlights
The opening set against Carthage saw some back-and-forth play until the Pioneers pulled ahead by four behind a five-point run. UW-Platteville maintained that edge for the remainder of the set to win 25-20. Set two featured similar play, and the two teams alternated runs with the Pioneers holding a slim 24-22 advantage. Junior Kierney McDonald wrapped up a second set win 25-23 with a kill to give UW-Platteville a 2-0 match lead.
The Pioneers finished off the sweep with a 25-18 set three win behind a six-point run. UW-Platteville had 11 total kills in the final set while posting a .276 hitting percentage.
Freshman Brooklyn Radecke paced the team with 11 kills while recording a .292 hitting percentage. McDonald joined her in double figures with 10, while senior Emma Carlson added seven. The Pioneers finished with 36 kills as a team in the match to go with a .221 hitting mark.
Junior Gracie Gibbens led the way with 28 assists, while junior Bri Gartner had a team-high 10 digs. UW-Platteville put together 15 service aces in the sweep, with Carlson and sophomore Grace Betke each totaling six.
Match Two Highlights
Against North Park, an early 12-point run helped UW-Platteville cruise to a 25-14 set one victory, but the Vikings answered by taking the second set 25-19. In the third set, the Pioneers led 16-13 until nine unanswered points handed them a 25-13 win to take a 2-1 match lead. Another seven-point run in set four allowed UW-Platteville to take an early lead and ultimately secure the four-set win with a 25-18 victory.
McDonald had a team-high 12 killls, while Radecke added eight and Carlson finished with seven. The Pioneers had 37 total kills in the win, and posted a .227 hitting percentage.
Gibbens led the team in assists with 27 and tied with Gartner for the team lead in digs with 12.
The Pioneers played strong defense at the net, finishing with one solo block and 18 block assists. Sophomore Kennedy Wenger finished with six block assists, while McDonald had five.
