Pioneers Sweep Pointers in Regular Season Finale

PLATTEVILLE, Wis. – The University of Wisconsin-Platteville volleyball team picked up another sweep on Friday night, this time against UW-Stevens Point inside Williams Fieldhouse. The Pioneers (23-5, 3-3 WIAC) defeated the Pointers (19-9, 5-1 WIAC) 25-10, 26-24, and 25-20.

With the win, the Pioneers lock in the five seed in the WIAC Tournament and will travel to four seed UW-Eau Claire on Tuesday night for a 7 p.m. match. UW-Stevens Point will have a bye as the Pointers are the two seed. UW-Oshkosh won the regular season and will be the one seed. UW-Platteville enters the tournament having swept both of the top-two teams during the regular season.

The Pioneers were hitting .257 on Friday night and holding the Pointers to just .031.

Senior Emma Carlson finished with a match-high 17 kills, hitting .394 while junior Kierney McDonald finished with 11 kills and a .474 kill percentage. Kierney also finished with seven block assists across the three sets.

Junior Bri Gartner had a match-high 18 digs and junior Gracie Gibbens finished with a match-high 36 assists.

The Pioneers used an 8-0 run featuring back-to-back blocks by McDonald with freshman Brooklyn Radecke and Gibbens to take a commanding 10-1 lead in the first set. The Pointers managed to find a couple of single points along the way for the remainder of the match, but UW-Platteville took a 1-0 advantage on the match after the comfortable 25-10 win.

The second set was much more competitive with the Pointers reaching set-point first, but service error followed by a kill by McDonald and then another block by McDonald and Radecke captured the 26-24 win.

UW-Platteville never trailed in the final set and it was fittingly Carlson who had the match-winning kill as the senior was playing in her last home game as a Pioneer.

*As with every UW-Platteville win this year, the Platteville A&W will be offering a $3 Pioneer burger the day after the win and the Platteville Taco John's will be offering 10 tacos for $10 the day after each Pioneer win.
