Pioneers Swept By Warhawks

WHITEWATER, Wis. – The 17th-ranked University of Wisconsin-Platteville volleyball team (21-5, 3-3 WIAC) was swept by 5th-ranked UW-Whitewater (21-3, 4-2 WIAC) on Wednesday night inside the Kris Russell Volleyball Arena in Whitewater.

The Warhawks capitalized on several multi-point runs to take the first set by a score of 25-15. UW-Platteville answered by taking an early four-point lead in the second set, but UW-Whitewater rallied and took the lead behind five unanswered points. The Pioneers were able to get back within four, but the Warhawks took a 2-0 match lead with a 25-20 victory.

The Warhawks looked to put the match away early in the third set, but the Pioneers were able to battle back from an eight-point deficit to take a 23-20 lead behind a nine-point run. UW-Whitewater tied the set with three straight points and later secured the sweep by scoring the final three points to win 27-25.

Emma Carlson finished with a team-high 12 kills and 11 digs to record the double-double. The senior reached 1561 career kills in the match, moving her up to third all-time in the Pioneers record books, surpassing Rachel Chapman's 1557, and just 10 shy of second.

Junior Kierney McDonald and freshman Brooklyn Radecke tied for second on the team with nine kills apiece, while sophomore Kennedy Wenger added seven. For the match, the Pioneers had 41 total kills while posting a hitting percentage of .190.

Junior Gracie Gibbens paced the team with 18 assists, while junior Bri Gartner finished second on the team with eight digs.

The Pioneers travel to North Park this Saturday to play a pair of matches. UW-Platteville will face Carthage at 4:30 p.m. followed by North Park at 7 p.m.
