Baseball drops first two of four-game series to UW-Stevens Point

WHITEWATER, Wis. – The University of Wisconsin-Platteville baseball team dropped its opening two games of a four-game series with UW-Stevens Point, 7-1, 14-3 (7 innings) at Miller Stadium.

The Pioneers and Pointers are playing their weekend series at UW-Whitewater due to unplayable field conditions at Platteville and Stevens Point.

GAME ONE: UW-Platteville 1, UW-Stevens Point 7

The Pointers broke the scoreless contest in the top of the sixth. A pair of hits generated the Pointers' two runs and UWSP added another run in the seventh making it a 3-0 game.

The Pioneers finally broke through in the bottom of the seventh. Senior Tyler Jacobson led the inning off with a double through the left side and eventually scored on a double by George Jester III, 3-1.

The Pointers broke the game open in the eighth inning scoring three runs and taking 6-1 lead. UW-Stevens Point tacked on another run in the ninth for a little more insurance.

Senior Adam Theis suffered the loss and threw 7.1 innings while allowing five runs (three unearned) on 10 hits.

Senior Jon Lewerke and Bobby Bean recorded the Pioneers other two hits as UW-Platteville was out hit 11-4.

GAME TWO: UW-Platteville 3, UW-Stevens Point 14

The Pointers kept their bats going the night cap, scoring four runs on three hits to open the game. UW-Platteville got a run back in the bottom of the second on a Bean RBI single.

UWSP responded with three runs in the third and posted three more on the board in the fourth, 10-2.

The Pioneers started to chip away at their deficit in the bottom half of the fourth scoring two runs. Lewerke led the inning off with a single and scored on Bean's double to right field. Bean scored a batter later on a wild pitch.

UW-Stevens Point answered with four runs in the fifth and put the 10-run rule into affect, 14-3.

Shane Murphy started and only got through three innings and gave up seven runs on eight hits earning the loss.

The Pioneer hit the ball better in game two tallying eight hits but left on 10 runners on base.

UW-Platteville get another crack at the Pointers on Saturday at 10 a.m. at Miller Stadium.
