Pointers take final two games over Baseball

WHITEWATER, Wis. – The University of Wisconsin-Platteville baseball team fell to UW-Stevens Point in Saturday's doubleheader, 6-2 and 5-4.

Weather conditions forced the Pioneers to host the Pointers at Prucha Field at James B. Miller Stadium in Whitewater, Wis.

GAME ONE: UW-Platteville 2, UW-Stevens Point 6

The Pioneers struck first with a two-run home run by senior Jon Lewerke in the bottom of the second inning.

The Pointers managed to get a run back in the top of the third on three hits.

UW-Stevens Point broke the game up in the sixth inning with four runs. A three-run home run by Sean Gerber gave the Pointers a 5-2 lead.

UWSP added an insurance run in the seventh expanding its lead to 6-2.

Freshman Austin Daniels made his first collegiate start and didn't go the way he would have wanted by giving up nine hits and five runs.

Fellow Freshman Casey Schroeder tallied two of the Pioneers four hits.

GAME TWO: UW-Platteville 4, UW-Stevens Point 5

Once again the Pioneers got on the board first in the fourth inning. Senior Tyler Jacobson earned a one-out walk and scored two batters later.

The Pointers used another big inning gaining a 3-1 lead in the sixth inning. UW-Platteville responded with two runs of their own in the bottom half of the inning, tying the game up at 3-3. Rookie George Jester III put the Pioneers within one with a RBI single and Lewerke recorded his third RBI on the day to tie up the game.

The Pioneers managed to not give up another big inning in the seventh as UWSP scored a run to regain the lead while leaving  three runners on base. The Pointers tacked on an insurance run in the eight taking a 5-3 lead.

With two outs, the Pioneers loaded up the base but were only able to push one run across home plate, 5-4.

Lewerke led the team with two hits as Jester tallied two RBIs.

Freshman Shane Sosinsky made his first collegiate start and just like Daniels didn't get the result he wanted and gave up five hits and three runs earning a no decision. Senior Bill Oppriecht took the loss giving up two runs on three hits in 3.2 relief innings.

The Pioneers return to UW-Whitewater on Wednesday for a doubleheader with the Warhawks starting at 1 p.m.
