The University of Wisconsin-Platteville lost a WIAC doubleheader to host UW-Superior on Monday, 5-0 and 10-3 in Duluth, Minnesota.
The Pioneers (5-24, 1-13 WIAC) stranded 10 base runners in each contest. UW-Superior (16-13, 7-7 WIAC) out hit the Pioneers by a 20 to 7 margin in the doubleheader sweep.
In game one, UW-Platteville was held to two hits by Bobby Bean and Tyler Jacobson - by UW-Superior starter Matt Swanson, who went the distance for the win.
Swanson overcame five walks and struck out nine to raise his record to 3-2. The Pioneers stranded two baserunners in three innings, the third, fourth and ninth in the loss. UW-Platteville starter Bill Oppriecht pitched 5 2/3 innings, scattering seven hits, allowing five runs - four earned and struck out six in the loss to fall to 2-5.
Swanson got his run support in the first and sixth inning. UW-Superior scored twice in the opening inning and added three more in the sixth. Wyatt Soderquist and Jeff Miller paced an eight-hit attack with two hits each. Soderquist delivered a two-RBI triple in the sixth and Miller had a RBI double in the first to lead the home team.
In the nightcap, UW-Superior scored three times in the first two innings en route to an early 6-0 lead. The Pioneers got on the board in the third when Cody Luther stole home after a double and a steal of third.
The Yellowjackets added another run in the fourth for a 7-1 lead until UW-Platteville came back scored its second run of the game on a UW-Superior wild pitch in the fifth. They added an unearned run in the seventh to trim the deficit to 7-3 before the Yellowjackets plated three more in the bottom half of the inning en route to the 10-3 win.
Topher Scheeler had two of the Pioneers' five hits in the loss. Eight of the nine Yellowjackets in the lineup contributed to a 12-hit attack including Robbie Veith, who had three hits to go along with two runs scored and two RBI to lead UW-Superior. Plus, T.J. Evanson had a three-run home run in the first en route to a four-RBI game for the winners.
UW-Platteville utilized five pitchers in the loss including starter Zach Ryan, who falls to 0-2 on the season. UW-Superior starter Dan Genrich went eight solid innings, allowing five hits - three runs (two earned) and struck out 11 to raise his record to 4-2 on the season.
Next, the Pioneers will return home to Kendall Murray Field on Wednesday at 1 p.m., when they host UW-Whitewater in a WIAC doubleheader.
