The University of Wisconsin-Platteville baseball team split a WIAC doubleheader with UW-Whitewater on Wednesday at Kendall Murray Field, winning game one, 14-9 and losing the nightcap, 10-2.
The doubleheader split improves the Pioneers to 6-25 overall and 2-14 in the WIAC; whereas the Warhawks go to 19-12 overall and 9-7 in the WIAC.
In game one, the two teams featured on an offensive explosion that included 23 runs on 29 hits for just three scoreless innings.
The Pioneers pounded out a season-high 14 runs on 17 hits as Tyler Jacobson had a team-high four hits to lead five players from UW-Platteville with multiple hits. He was joined by Cody Luther, Trevor Kattre and Topher Scheeler. Luther and Jacobson each scored four runs, Kattre and Scheeler drove in five and three, respectively.
UW-Whitewater also had five players with multiple hits in the loss. J.T. Schneider, Jared Fon and Ryan Leavitt each drove in two runs for the Warhawks.
In addition to the offensive explosion, the Pioneer defense turned three double plays in the game. UW-Platteville relievers Grant Oldenburg and Shane Murphy pitched the final five innings in relief of starter Cory Newburg shut down the UW-Whitewater attack. The two combined to allow just two hits and gave up just one run in relief.
The Warhawks utilized five pitchers in the contest against the Pioneers. Quintin Zander, who came into the game in relief of starter Kyle Stewart, was the losing pitcher after a two inning stint, giving up three hits, three runs - two earned.
In the win, UW-Platteville scored four in the fifth, three in the first and fourth innings, twice in the second and seventh en route to the victory. It is the first win by a UW-Platteville team over UW-Whitewater in 2011-12.
