The University of Wisconsin-Platteville baseball team dropped a
twinbill to Franklin College on Saturday, 7-2 and 8-3.
The Pioneers (1-5) gave up four runs in the first and three more
in the sixth before scoring twice in the opener. Trevor Kattre and Levi Ney each had
two hits in the loss for the Pioneers.
The Grizzlies (9-2) spread 10 hits throughout the lineup with
each hitter, recording a hit in the win. Nathan Ellis went the
distance for a seven-inning complete game, scattering eight hits
and striking out 10 to lead Franklin College. The top of the order
for Franklin, Jarrett Johnson and Scott Windler each had two hits
to lead the attack.
In the nightcap, Franklin was led by its starting pitcher as
Shawn Mattingly went seven innings, scattering four hits and
striking out seven for the win.
The Pioneers found themselves behind 5-0 before scoring once in
the sixth and the home team added three more in the seventh before
surrendering a run each in the final two innings.
Offensively, UW-Platteville (1-6) was held to just four hits in
the contest. Franklin (10-2) had three players with multiple hits
to support the effort from Mattingly. Shortstop Nick Stoia went
2-for-3 with two RBI and three runs scored to pace the
Grizzlies.
The three-game series will wrap up with a contest on Sunday at
noon in Franklin, Indiana at McDowell Field.
