Despite an 11-9 advantage in hits,
the UW-Platteville baseball team dropped a 9-7 decision to Buena
Vista on Saturday in Jacksonville, Ill.
The Pioneers (1-3) had three
players with multiple hits including Trevor Kattre, Jesse Wiley and
Tyler
Jacobson and Levi
Ney had three RBI in the loss. Starter Adam Theis went five
innings, striking out two and gave up six runs – five earned
for the loss to fall to 0-1.
The Beavers (4-6) got on the board
with a four-run second inning and added to its lead with a run each
in the fifth and eighth as well as three more in the sixth. Ryan
Scheetz and Brock Yossi paced the Buena Vista attack with two hits
apiece in the win. Starting pitcher Lucas Hadaway kept the Pioneers
in check with a five-inning stint, scattering just four hits and
striking out eight for the win.
UW-Platteville got on the board in
the third with a RBI double by Kattre that cut the deficit to 4-1.
Buena Vista answered the run when they scored once in the fifth and
three unearned runs in the sixth to stretch the lead to 8-1.
The Pioneers answered with a solo
home run by Zach
Demmon in the seventh and a sacrifice fly by Ney in the seventh
trimmed the deficit to 8-2. Buena Vista added its final run in the
top of the eighth before the UW-Platteville offense erupted for
four runs in the bottom of the eighth, two of which came in on a
two-RBI double for Ney.
In the second game of the
afternoon, the Pioneers dropped a 7-4 decision to North
Central.
The Pioneers (1-4) for the
second-straight game had three players with multiple-hits including
Trevor Kattre, Zach Demmon and Jon Lewerke and Cody Luther added
three RBI.
The Cardinals (4-2) were led by the
three-hit effort from Alex Khoury, who went 3-for-3 and starting
pitcher Ben Krusen went six solid innings, scattering four hits and
striking out four.
North Central did all of its damage
at the plate in the third inning with a five-run effort and in the
sixth with two more runs. In the third, they scored five times on
seven hits and in the sixth; they did it on three hits.
UW-Platteville got on the board
with a solo home run by Levi Ney in eighth and plated three more on
a three-run roundtripper by Luther in the ninth.
Next, the Pioneers will travel to
Franklin, Indiana for a three-game series against Franklin College.
Action will get underway with a doubleheader on Saturday, Mar. 17
at noon.
