Three starters for UW-Eau Claire scored in double figures en route to a 71-62 win over host University of Wisconsin-Platteville to spoil a career game by UW-Platteville junior Claire Poad.
Poad, a junior guard from Mineral Point hit six 3-pointers and scored a game-high 23 points, in the loss to lead UW-Platteville, who falls to 3-6 overall and 0-2 in the WIAC. She was joined in double figures by junior Liz Lawinger who had 12 points and a game-high five assists in the contest.
UW-Eau Claire (6-2, 2-0 WIAC) was led by Nicole Christianson, who had 22 points to lead the Blugolds. Callie Halama and Sarah Bingea added 19 and 10 points, respectively. The trio combined to score 29 of the points for the visitors in the final 20 minutes. The taller Blugolds outrebounded the Pioneers by a 42 to 33 margin in the win as Ellen Plendl had a game-high 13 rebounds.
Facing a 30-11 deficit with 8:46 to play in the first half, UW-Platteville closed out the first half with a 23-4 run to tie the game at 34. During the run, Poad made three 3-pointers in the run for the Pioneers.
In the second half, the contest remained close and would be tied on five occasions until UW-Eau Claire closed out the contest with a 17-6 run in the last 10 minutes for the win. In the run, Christianson scored eight points and defensively, the Blugolds held the Pioneers to 2-for-17 shooting to lead UW-Eau Claire to the victory.
The Pioneers will next travel to Menomonie on Saturday and face UW-Stout at 4 p.m.
