UW-Platteville Rallies to Defeat UW-Stout, 57-53

The University of Wisconsin-Platteville women's basketball team erased an 11-point deficit early in the second half to post a 57-53 win over host UW-Stout on Saturday afternoon in Menomonie.

The Pioneers (4-6, 1-2 WIAC) trailed 38-27 with 15:03 to play in the game before a 10-3 spurt, later in the half, punctuated by a three-point play by junior Liz Lawinger put UW-Platteville in front for the first time of the day. The three-point play with 1:46 left in the game by the Mineral Point native put UW-Platteville in front 53-51 and for the remainder of the contest.

Lawinger finished the contest with a game-high 18 points, three assists and five steals to lead UW-Platteville. She was joined in double figures by Kim Wellnitz, who scored a career-high 12 in the win.

It is the first win by UW-Platteville in Menomonie since a 63-54 victory on December 3, 2005. The Pioneers out rebounded UW-Stout by a 45 to 40 margin, including 22 offensive boards as Claire Poad and Ashley Henry each grabbed 11 rebounds in the win.

The Blue Devils (3-7, 0-3 WIAC) were led by Sami Schoeder, who had 16 points to lead UW-Stout. An aggressive UW-Platteville defense held them to 35% shooting from the field, including a 2-for-16 effort on 3-point field goal attempts. Defensively, the Pioneers held UW-Stout to just two points in the final 3:15 of the game.

Next, UW-Platteville is idle until when they host UW-Oshkosh at Bo Ryan Court on Saturday, Dec. 17 at 7:30 p.m.
