Paige LeGate of the University of Wisconsin-Eau Claire scored in the 109th minute for a 2-1 victory by the host Blugolds over the University of Wisconsin-Platteville women's soccer team on Saturday afternoon.
The two teams had played a scoreless second half and were just shy of a tie contest when LeGate scored on a shot from Gina Williams for the game-winning goal. With the win, UW-Eau Claire raises its record to 6-3-1 and 2-2 in the WIAC; whereas, the Pioneers fall to 5-6 overall and 1-2 in the WIAC.
UW-Eau Claire got on the board in the 11th minute when Rachel Nelson scored her team-leading sixth goal of the season. The Pioneers rallied to equalize when Melissa Dunlavy scored an unassisted goal in the 28th minute.
The Blugolds challenged the Pioneers throughout the contest with a commanding 28 to 5 advantage in shots; however, Pioneer goalkeeper Molly Bender had the answer with a season-high 13 saves.
The Pioneers will be on the road for its next contest when they travel to UW-Oshkosh, next Saturday, Oct. 8 at 2:30 p.m.
