Sophomore Anthony Heller scored his first career goal with 11
seconds remaining, giving UW-Platteville a thrilling 2-1 victory
over visiting University of Dubuque Wednesday.
B.J. Gottschlich threw the ball in from the right side, and the
6-1 Heller soared above the crowd to head the ball in.
The goal capped a furious comeback by the Pioneers, who tied the
contest with 4:30 remaining on Kyle Hoerter's third goal of the
season. He dribbled around the defenders and blasted in a shot to
the left corner.
The fiercely-contested win raised the Pioneers' record to 9-8-2
heading into the season finale with the WIAC championship on the
line. The Pioneers are tied with UW-Whitewater at 2-0-1 in the new
league, and UW-Oshkosh is 2-0. UWP and UWO meet Sunday at 2 p.m. in
Pioneer Stadium, with Oshkosh facing UWW the following week. A
Pioneer win would ensure them no worse than a tie for the first
league title.
The Spartans, who fell to 13-3-2, got a goal from Matt Mechnig
two seconds before the end of the first half.
