PLATTEVILLE, Wis. – The University of Wisconsin-Platteville athletic teams enter the second week of competition, with men's and women's soccer and football each competing at home. Volleyball gets set for a busy week with four road games, while women's golf and women's cross country each travel for invites this weekend.
Women's Soccer Play Two at Home
The Pioneers women's soccer team earned its first win of the season this past weekend and now returns home for a pair of games this week. On Wednesday, UW-Platteville will face Augustana (Ill.) at 5 p.m. before hosting St. Olaf for Youth Night on Saturday at 6 p.m.
The Vikings improved to 1-0-1 on the season after beating Buena Vista 6-1 this past Friday. Mary Baker and Allison Gibeau share the team lead with two goals apiece over the first two games.
Volleyball Travels for Four Matches
The Pioneers volleyball team will play four times this week, starting at Wartburg on Wednesday night at 7 p.m. The team then travels to Milwaukee for the Wisconsin Lutheran College Tournament this weekend, with Millikin scheduled for Friday at 6 p.m. The Pioneers wrap up the weekend on Saturday against Rose-Hulman (10 a.m.) and Wisconsin Lutheran (noon).
Wartburg is 2-3 on the year after picking up a pair of five-set wins over the weekend, including one against Carthage. Ashlynn Hodges (2.76 kills per set) and Kaylle Koudelka (2.40) lead the attack for the Knights.
Millikin has won back-to-back matches to improve to 3-2 in the early stages of the season. Rose-Hulman enters the week having lost three straight, while Wisconsin Lutheran earned its first victory this past weekend against Saint Mary's (Minn.).
Men's Soccer Hosts Coe Thursday
Following a two-game road trip, the Pioneers men's soccer team returns home on Thursday night for a contest against Coe. Game time is set for 7 p.m. inside Ralph E. Davis Pioneer Stadium.
The Kohawks are off to a 1-2-0 start, and will face Cornell on Wednesday night before making the trip to Platteville on Thursday. Brandon Kostelny has netted two of the teams four goals so far.
Women's Golf Competes in Iowa
After the season opened this past week, the Pioneers women's golf team continues competition at the Mustang Fall Invite this Saturday and Sunday in Marion, Iowa. The invite, hosted by Mount Mercy, takes place at Hunters Ridge Golf Course.
Football Takes on Dubuque at Home
The fourth-ranked Pioneers football team will play at home for the second straight week on Saturday, this time against Dubuque for Alumni Day at 1 p.m.
The Spartans fell 34-20 to UW-Stout Polytechnic in week one despite 325 passing yards and two touchdowns from quarterback Joey Rhomberg. Wide receiver Cameron Brown was his top target with 14 receptions for 180 yards and a touchdown.
Women's Cross Country Competes at Luther Invite
The Pioneers women's cross country team begins the season this Saturday at the Luther Invite. Running from Decorah, Iowa, is scheduled for 11:45 a.m.
