PLATTEVILLE, Wis. – The fall athletic seasons continue for the University of Wisconsin-Platteville teams, with women's soccer and volleyball competing at home this week. Football hits the road for the first time this Saturday, while men's soccer, women's golf, and cross country also travel to competition.
Women's Soccer at home Wednesday and Saturday
The Pioneers women's soccer team continues a stretch of six straight home games this week against Wartburg on Wednesday night and Illinois Wesleyan on Saturday evening. Saturday's 6 p.m. contest will also be Alumni Night for the program.
The Knights picked up their first win of the season on Saturday with a 1-0 shutout of Saint Mary's (Minn.). Overall, Wartburg is 1-2-1 and have gotten strong goalie play from Tulla Jensen this season.
Illinois Wesleyan is off to an unbeaten start of 2-0-3, including a recent 6-1 win over Westminster this past weekend. The Titans host Knox and Illinois College this week before traveling to UW-Platteville on Saturday. Ava Mapes has scored five goals in five games, while Sophie Lampert has added four.
Volleyball hosts weekend tournament
Following a road match at Coe on Wednesday, the Pioneers will play at home for the first time this season at the UW-Platteville Tournament this Friday and Saturday. The Pioneers will face MSOE on Friday at 5 p.m. before playing UChicago and Augustana (Ill.) on Saturday afternoon.
Coe is 3-4 on the year after recent losses to Edgewood and UW-Eau Claire. Tessa Casebolt and Jasmine Shields lead the attack for the Kohawks.
MSOE is off to a 5-2 start after recently winning three of four at its home invite this past weekend. Emma Schattschneider paces the team with 3.59 kills per set.
UChicago is receiving votes in the top 25 after starting a perfect 8-0 on the season, including five sweeps. Four different players average at least 2.00 kills per set, while Kennedy Cheung (3.68 digs per set) and Ellie Maxwell (3.18) lead the defense.
Augustana enters the week having lost two straight to fall to 2-4 on the year. The Vikings will play Monmouth on Tuesday before traveling to Platteville for three matches this weekend.
Men's Soccer visits Wartburg Wednesday
The Pioneers men's soccer team rides a two-match winning streak into a road contest against Wartburg on Wednesday night. Game time is scheduled for 7:30 p.m.
The Knights are coming off a 3-3 draw against MSOE this past weekend and are 1-1-3 overall on the year. Flori Gembo and Alima Mmunga lead the team with six points apiece this season.
Cross Country runs at St. Olaf Invite
The Pioneers cross country team is back in action this Saturday at the St. Olaf Invite in Northfield, Minnesota. The meet allows the team to preview the NCAA North Regional Championships course, which takes place in mid-November.
Football travels to face Springfield
Coming off a shutout win over Dubuque, the Pioneers football team hits the road for the first time this Saturday against Springfield College. Kickoff is set for noon EST.
The Pride are also 2-0 on the season, and blanked Husson 48-0 in their week two matchup. Springfield's rushing attack is among the best in country, ranking second with 442.5 yards per game. It will be a tough test for UW-Platteville's run defense, which is second in DIII with just 7.0 yards allowed per game.
Women's Golf competes in Madison
After a successful weekend in Iowa, the Pioneers women's golf team travels to Madison this Sunday for the two-day Edgewood Women's Fall Invite. Competition will take place at Odana Hills Golf Course.
