Massa Breaks Single-Season Hits Record in 12-8 Win at Edgewood

MADISON, Wis. – Sophomore Anthony Massa went 4-for-4 on Monday to break the University of Wisconsin-Platteville single-season record for hits in the baseball team's 12-8 win over Edgewood College at Stampfl Field.

Massa finishes the season with 71 hits and breaks Johnny Kelso's record of 69 hits set in 2021. Senior Connor Gresens joined Massa in going a perfect 4-for-4 on the day and added six RBI, including a three-run home run to open the game.

The three runs scored on the third at-bat of the game after a leadoff single by freshman Brayden Knoll was followed by a single from Massa and Gresens' homerun. Junior Evan Bohr hit an RBI-single before the end of the first inning to give the Pioneers a 4-0 advantage.

Massa hit a leadoff single to start the second frame and reached home when Gresens doubled to right center. Still in the second inning, UW-Platteville extended the lead to 7-0 on a two-run shot over right field from senior Mason Molitor

The Eagles rallied in the bottom of the second as they scored five runs and then tied the game 7-7 in the fourth. Massa broke the record in the fifth inning on a double hit deep to right center. Gresens drove in Massa on a go-ahead RBI-single, but Edgewood responded once again with a tying run on a sacrifice fly to left field in the bottom of the fifth.

In the seventh inning, the Pioneers went ahead again as two runs scored off a single to left center from sophomore Jacob Gervase. Leading 10-8, UW-Platteville added a few insurance runs in the eighth, starting with a solo-run blast by Knoll. Massa followed the home run with his second double of the day and was once again driven in by Gresens on a single to right center.

Sophomore Logan Kottmeyer captured his second win on the year, tossing four innings of relief where he struck out four, walked two and allowed zero runs to score on four hits. Freshman Carver Kamentz collected his third save of the season and did not allow a run to score as he closed out the last .2 inning.

UW-Platteville finishes the season 21-19 overall, it's first winning season on record since 2015. The 2026 Pioneers squad is also the first team since 2015 to reach 21 wins in a season.
