Pioneers Post Split With Falcons Friday

RIVER FALLS, Wis. – The University of Wisconsin-Platteville baseball team (13-4, 4-2 WIAC) split with UW-River Falls (7-9, 1-5) on Friday afternoon. The Falcons took game one 3-0, but the Pioneers bounced back with a strong effort to take game two 12-0.

Game One
Neither team mustered up much offense in the early innings until the Falcons broke through with a solo home run to lead off the bottom of the fourth inning. UW-River Falls would add to its lead with runs in each of the fifth and sixth innings while holding UW-Platteville for the 3-0 win.

Senior Jordan Stanton posted a qualify start for the Pioneers but fell to 3-1 with the loss. He threw six innings while allowing three runs on seven hits with four strikeouts and just one walk. In relief, sophomore Brayden Schimmel tossed two scoreless frames while striking out two.

UW-Platteville recorded six hits in the first contest, with sophomore Trinity Beland's 2-for-4 performance leading the way. Sophomore Anthony Massa had the team's lone extra-base hit, a double in the sixth inning.

Game Two
Starting pitcher Pierce Nelson put together a dominant outing in game two, holding the Falcons without a run across seven innings to earn his second win of the season. Nelson pitched 6.2 no-hit innings until UW-River Falls tallied its lone hit of the contest. The senior needed just 84 pitches across the seven-inning win and struck out one and walked one.

The Pioneers offense gave Nelson some help early, scoring five times in the second inning to jump in front. Beland was hit by pitch with the bases loaded to score the first run before freshman Kaleb Elwood doubled home two runs in the next at-bat. Massa capped the frame with another double that brought in Beland and Elwood.

A one-out double by sophomore Jacob Gervase led to another UW-Platteville run as junior Dylan Rippentrop followed him with an RBI triple in the top of the third. Junior Evan Bohr then knocked Rippentrop in with a single to make it 7-0.

In the fourth, Gervase plated Massa with a single for the Pioneers' eighth run of the game. UW-Platteville then tacked on three more runs in the sixth inning to make it 11-0. Freshman Brayden Knoll scored on a wild pitch, before Rippentrop brought in another with a sacrifice fly. Bohr capped that inning with his second RBI single of the game. UW-Platteville's final run of the win came in the seventh, as junior Connor Gresens bounced out but scored senior Mason Molitor.

The Pioneers finished with 15 hits in game two, highlighted by three-hit games by Elwood and Bohr. Elwood doubled twice and drove in two runs, while Gervase scored three times to lead the team. Massa had a pair of hits, including his two-run double.
