Pioneers Split with Pointers

STEVENS POINT, Wis.  – The University of Wisconsin-Platteville softball team (18-11, 4-2 WIAC) defeated UW-Stevens Point (21-8, 3-4 WIAC) in a 5-4 thriller after dropping the first game 10-1 in five innings on Saturday from McCarty Memorial Field.

Game One
The Pointers used a hot start to jump out to a five-run lead in the first frame. The Pioneers answered with one run in the second inning, but bats went quite and UW-Stevens Point scored five more runs in the fourth inning for the run-rule victory.

Game Two
Once again, UW-Stevens Point got on the board first with one run scoring in the second inning off a wild pitch. The Pioneers then overtook the lead with back-to-back solo home runs by senior Melissa Dietz and junior Rylee Broshous in the top of the fourth. The advantage was quickly taken away in the bottom of the fourth due to thee runs by the Pointers.

UW-Platteville had the last word though, as freshman Kaia McVay's two-RBI single tied the game in the sixth, right before freshman Tessa Britt's RBI single through the right side drove in the go-ahead run.

Freshman Nora Buske (W, 7-2) tallied seven strikeouts in seven innings while also walking eight and allowing four runs on six hits.

Up next this weekend, the Pioneers travel to UW-Stout on Sunday for a doubleheader against the Blue Devils. First pitch is scheduled for noon.
